Woods Way as the late founder's legacy continues to attract the world.   The two restaurants and the global grocery business are among the 200 venues listed in New York City to visit on Black Restaurant Day, Saturday, Aug. 6 and throughout the 13th National Black Business Month in August.


By 2020, Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery CEO and Founder  Lowell Hawthorne wants Jamaican food to be ubiquitous across the United States.  Today's second annual National Jamaican Pattie Day celebrates the signature menu item that propelled his one South Bronx bakery in the early 1990s to 120 franchise locations in nine states.   Hawthorne is well on the way to the goal, having recently appeared in the network show Undercover Boss.

Easter is a great time of year to get together with family.  Being from a family that owned a very successful catering company in Houston, I have fond memories of Easter dinner.

We always had Easter dinner at my grandparents' home because my parents always had parties to cater on holidays.  After quickly getting all the parties out we couldn't wait to get to Pappas house to eat.    My grandfather was a chef from New Orleans and his dinners were always exceptionally good.  The table was always set with fine china, crystal, silver and cloth napkins

Over the years this menu is what our family traditionally serves on Easter, following in Pappas footsteps.  I find this menu to be simple to prepare and a sure crowd pleaser.

Our grandparents and parents are no longer with us but the memories of Easter are forever etched in my memory.  The flavors of the food and the enjoyment of spending time together will always be with me. I learned valuable lessons around this dinner table including proper dining etiquette. Pappa would ask, "How do you know that food needs salt? You haven't even tasted it"     We should return to the tradition of eating together, sharing stories and enjoying each other's company over dinner. 


Who cooked for the cowboys?

KC's BarBCue in Berkeley features a horse-drawn wagon like those used in cattle drives in the 19th century when one-third of cowboys were African-Americans and almost always African-Americans were the trail cooks, giving definition to the cuisine of the West  The decor fits the history.   Find this jewel of culinary magic at 2613 San Pablo Ave. in Berkeley for meals such as their brisket sandwich, below.

Simply Healthy!

Known for its smoothies since 1981, Simply Wholesome's Caribbean Sunshine was a great addition to the Masala Spice with shrimp.   The combination restaurant-book store-grocery is the meeting spot for Los Angelenos with outdoor dining at Slauson and Overhill.

A visit to Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Mall in Los Angeles is incomplete without Southern Girl bakery's award winning desserts.  We couldn't choose between peach cobbler and pecan pie so we chose both.

Which came first, the chicken or the waffle?

After a state senator from Ohio refused to eat any more hotel food, it was time for an intervention from BlackRestaurant.NET  Eshewing a chance to watch the Wiz, we visited Roscoe's Chicken & Waffes at LaBrea and Pico, putting in a history lesson about Pio Pico in the process.

Roscoes has been a Los Angeles food landmark since 1975.
